The Motivator BETA

Why did you create this site ?

I built this site primarily to help me manage my own time. I have always had a problem with procrasination so I created a tool to help me. A few people expressed an interest in using it themselves so I decided to make it public.

How does the site work ?

The main object of the site is to promote good time management practices and to teach you how to manage procrastination. The site uses a goal/rewards system to helpmotivate you to complete tasks.

You use the site by creating lists of tasks that you have to complete. The tasks can have due dates assigned to them, an urgency level or both. An example of a task list may be entitled "Pay Bills" and might have the items:

  • Transfer money to credit account
  • Pay Power Bill
  • Pay Phone Bill
  • Pay Car Insurance
  • Etc

You also create lists of rewards to give yourself. These are your motivation. A reward might be something like like an hour at the beach, an hour of playing of playing computer games, or buying yourself a DVD. You link your rewards lists to your tasks lists, so that when you cross a task off of your list, a reward is chosen for you.

So...how does the site work ?

To make your introduction to this site easier, here's a step by step guide on how to use the site. This guide follows the same process as the Introductory Wizard that you see when you first Login:

  1. Register an account on The Motivator
  2. Login to The Motivator
  3. Add Tasks to your first Task List
  4. Add Rewards to your first Reward List
  5. Start performing the tasks on your Task List.
  6. When you complete a Task, mark it off your list. You will be given a random Reward from your Reward List.
  7. Continue performing your Tasks until your Task List is complete.
  8. Start again from Step 3.

Glossary

Task

A Task can be anything that you need to do. It might be cleaning, paying bills doing an assignment etc.

Task List

Task Lists are used to group similar Tasks. For example, if you have multiple Tasks which involve paying bills, you might want to group them into a "Pay Bills" Task List. Task Lists are great for keeping track of multiple Tasks which you may be able to complete in one hit (eg Paying Bills at the Bank/Post Office).

Reward

Rewards are gifts to yourself for successfully completing Tasks. It may be something like buying something you like, watching a movie, playing a game, going to the beach etc. Rewards can have a monetary value attached to them so they can be matched with similar Tasks. For example completing a "Do the dishes" might be worth half an hours worth of television. Finishing a major homework assignment might be worth a new DVD.

Rewards are assigned randomly when you complete a Task. Rewards come in two varieties, Once-Off and Recurring, which you chose when you create the Reward. Once-Off rewards are things like purchases, where you are only going to buy something once. Recurring Rewards are things like time watching television, playing a game, going to the beach etc.

Be creative with your rewards. Remember, these are your motivation for completing your Tasks. They must be something that make you keen to finish your Tasks.

Reward List

Like Task Lists, Rewards lists are used to group similar Rewards together. For example, if you have many DVDs that you would like to buy, you could group them together under a "DVDs" Reward List. You can match a Reward List with a Task List, so when you complete a Task from a specific Task List, you will get a Reward from the matching Reward List.
